Throwing a spotlight on the rarely-appreciated art of Cuban music, arthouse director Wim Wenders (Perfect Days) explores the titular ensemble of aging bolero musicians previously thought to be past their prime. Spearheaded by guitarist Ry Cooder, these charismatic personalities revived their country’s musical legacy with a best-selling debut album in 1997; fresh off of that success, Wenders documents them recording a follow-up in Havana while performing in Amsterdam and New York City. The film’s intimate handheld camerawork effortlessly captures both the band’s joyous music and their reverence for their home country and its history.
